Barriers and facilitators to resolving older adult homelessness through stays with family: qualitative findings from the HOPE HOME study

Living with family and friends is a common strategy to prevent or exit homelessness, but little known about structural barriers that impede friends’ ability provide temporary permanent housing for older homeless adults. We conducted semi-structured interviews 46 participants from the HOPE HOME study, cohort of 350 community-recruited adults age 50 in Oakland, CA, who reported staying housed family/friends 1 more nights prior 6 months. 19 hosts 11 stakeholders homelessness. found perceived these stays as form rather than Structural providing exits homelessness included regulations restricting visitors changing rent obligations; decreased eligibility priority shelter housing; geographic transportation challenges; environments inconducive suggest four areas policy reform: subsidies individuals, removing disincentives stay family, lease regulations, expanding supply affordable housing.
